Charles Willson Peale's 1795 painting, The Staircase Group, is an illusionistic double portrait of his sons, Raphaelle and Titian Ramsay Peale, inviting viewers into a space that merges real and painted elements. The artwork features a physical wooden step and part of the staircase that seamlessly blend into the painted scene, a technique known as trompe-l'œil.
