Henri Matisse and the Development of Modern Art

Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (1869–1954) was a French artist whose bold use of colour and simplified forms helped shape the development of modern art. He first studied law, but began painting while recovering from illness and later trained as an artist in Paris.

During the early twentieth century, Matisse became closely associated with Fauvism, an artistic movement known for its vivid, non-naturalistic colours and expressive brushwork. Throughout his career, he produced paintings, drawings, sculpture, prints and illustrated books, often returning to subjects such as portraits, interiors, still lifes and the human figure.

In his later years, declining health made painting more difficult, and Matisse developed his celebrated paper cut-out technique. By arranging painted pieces of paper into energetic compositions, he created some of his most recognisable works, including The Snail, Blue Nude and images from Jazz.
