Delight in these stunning illustrations by William W. Denslow and John R. Neill, who brought L. Frank Baum's Oz book series to life.
The Oz book series begins with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), created by author L. Frank Baum, who went on to write fourteen full-length Oz books. Baum was styled as 'the Royal Historian of Oz' and created the illusion that characters such as Dorothy and Princess Ozma relayed their adventures in Oz to Baum by means of a wireless telegraph.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the first book in the series, was illustrated by William W. Denslow. Baum and Denslow held joint copyrights to this and other books they had worked on together but fell out, so subsequent Oz books were illustrated by John R. Neill.

John Rea Neill (1877-1943) was a magazine and children's book illustrator, primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz including L. Frank Baum's, Ruth Plumly Thompson's and three of his own. His drawings have become identified almost exclusively with the Oz series. He did a great deal of magazine and newspaper illustration work which is not as well known today.
He was first commissioned to illustrate 'The Marvelous Land of Oz', the second Oz book L. Frank Baum wrote, published in 1904. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the first book in the series, had been illustrated by W.W. Denslow, with whom Baum had argued and lost contact.

William Wallace Denslow (1856-1915) was an American illustrator and caricaturist remembered for his collaboration with author L. Frank Baum, especially for his illustrations for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Denslow may have met Baum at the Chicago Press Club, where both men were members. Besides 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', Denslow had also illustrated other books by Baum. Baum and Denslow held the copyrights to most of these works jointly. Baum vowed not to work with him again after he and Denslow quarrelled over royalty shares from the 1902 stage adaptation of 'The Wizard of Oz', for which Baum wrote the script and Denslow designed the sets and costumes. As co-copyright-holder, Denslow demanded an equal share in royalties with Baum and composer Paul Tietjens.
