Claude Monet
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a pioneering French painter and one of the founders of the Impressionist movement, a style that sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and colour.
Born in 1840 in Paris, Monet's early years were spent in Le Havre, where he developed a love for drawing. He moved to Paris to pursue formal art training, where he befriended fellow artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro.
Monet's approach to painting was revolutionary. Rather than focusing on the precise details of a subject, he sought to depict the transient effects of light and atmosphere. This is evident in his series of paintings such as 'Haystacks', 'Rouen Cathedral' and 'Water Lilies' where he painted the same scene at different times of day and seasons to capture the changing qualities.
His technique involved applying short, quick brushstrokes of pure colour, which, when viewed from a distance, blended to create vibrant, shimmering effects.
One of Monet's most famous works, 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872) gave the Impressionist movement its name. This painting, depicting the port of Le Havre at dawn, was initially criticised for its sketchy, unfinished appearance but later celebrated for its innovative approach.
Monet's ability to capture the essence of a moment with such spontaneity and freshness marked a departure from traditional academic painting and influenced countless artists.
In 1883, Monet moved to Giverny, where he created a stunning garden that became a central theme in his later works. The water lilies, Japanese bridge, and weeping willows that adorned his garden were immortalised in his expansive series of paintings. These works, particularly the large-scale water-lilies canvases, are celebrated for their immersive, meditative quality.
Monet's impact on the art world was profound. His exploration of light, colour and perception paved the way for modern art movements such as Abstract Expressionism.
Monet passed away on 5th December 1926, but his legacy endures through his timeless works, which continue to captivate and inspire.

Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
