John Lawson
John Lawson (1838-1908) was born on 10th June 1838 in Dunfermline, Scotland, to Robert Lawson, a weaver, and his wife Ann, nee Kirk. Lawson worked variously as a stained-glass designer, sculptor and artist, although he's perhaps best-known as a book illustrator.
He married Irish-born Martha Caragher (1838/9-1905) on 13th July 1858, just two months before the birth of their eldest daughter Lizzie.
The Lawsons' children included Lizzie (b.1858, Dunfermline), Martha Louise (b.1860, Dunfermline), Edwin John (b.1862, Midlothian), Williamina Jane or Minnie, m. McLean (1867-1893) and Noel Paton (b.1869). At some time between 1871 and 1881, the family moved down to London. Their address in 1891 was Italian Villa, 62, Hurlingham Road, Fulham, London. When Martha died in 1905, John was still living at the same address.
Books illustrated by John Lawson include There was Once by Mrs Oscar Wilde (Nister, 1888) and Childhood's Valley (1889).
Lawson died on 13th July 1908.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
