This book made Denslow's name but unfortunately, it was the only one of the Oz series of books he would do the illustrations for. Denslow had already worked with L. Frank Baum on other books, and then on 'Father Goose, His Book', the best-selling book of 1899. The Wizard of Oz was the best-seller of 1900, leading to a stage production in 1902. Baum and Denslow bitterly clashed over the split of royalties for this musical and went their separate ways. The rest of the Oz series that Baum would write, another thirteen books, was illustrated by John R. Neill.
