Poppyland c.1913 - G. Parsons Norman (1840-1914) - 12 images

When George Parsons Norman wrote and illustrated this book in around 1913, he would not have known the significance poppies would have just two years later.

'Poppyland' was a term coined by 19th-century poet and theatre critic Clement Scott and generally refers to the section of the North Norfolk coast in the UK, from Sheringham to Mundesley, first used in his poem 'The Garden of Sleep'.

Parsons Norman died in 1914 at the age of 74, just two months after the start of WW1. It was just over a year later that John McCrae's poem 'In Flanders Fields' was published in Punch magazine, and the link between poppies and the fallen of the war was indelibly made. This book is an innocent account of the rural idyll of this area, a juxtaposition to the later significance of poppies.
