Nicolae Tonitza (1886-1940) stands as one of Romania’s most celebrated painters, recognised for his distinctive style. Born in Bârlad, a town in eastern Romania, Tonitza was drawn to art from an early age. He studied at the Fine Arts School in Iași and further refined his craft in Munich and Paris, which were pivotal artistic centres at the turn of the 20th century. These experiences exposed him to a variety of influences, including Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, which would later inform his own artistic voice.

Tonitza’s work is often characterised by a masterful use of colour and a keen sensitivity to human emotion. Perhaps his most iconic subjects are children, whom he painted with rare empathy and tenderness. The artist’s portraits of children are notable for their melancholic yet gentle expressions, capturing both innocence and the burdens of their social environment. This emotional subtlety is seen as a hallmark of Tonitza’s art, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries.
