The Scream (1893) is an autobiographical, expressionistic construction based on Munch's actual experience of a scream piercing through nature while on a walk, after his two companions, seen in the background, had left him. Munch also created a lithographic version in 1895, which he printed on various different-coloured papers such as this one.
