Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) was born in Valencia and emerged as one of Spain’s most celebrated painters, renowned for his luminous and dynamic style.
His works predominantly showcase the Mediterranean landscapes, seaside scenes and the vibrant life of Spanish culture.
Sorolla’s early artistic training began at the San Carlos Academy in Valencia, where he developed a deep appreciation for colour and light.
Throughout his career, Sorolla’s paintings reflected a remarkable ability to capture the effects of sunlight, a signature component of his style. He often painted en plein air, immersing himself in the natural light to portray the fleeting moments of life, from the waves lapping at the shore to the playful attitudes of children.
In 1909, Sorolla received significant recognition when he was commissioned to create a series of murals for the Hispanic Society of America in New York. His ability to intertwine Spanish cultural themes with modernist techniques made him a pivotal figure in the transition between 19th-century realism and the burgeoning modernist movements.
Despite facing personal tragedies, including the loss of his beloved wife, Sorolla continued to create vibrant works until his death in 1923.
Today, his legacy endures through exhibitions around the world, where his ability to conjure the warmth and beauty of Spain remains as captivating as ever. His home in Madrid is now a museum, celebrating his contributions to the art world.
