Frederic Remington (1861-1900) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor and writer, renowned for his depictions of the American West.

Born in 1861 in Canton, New York, Remington's fascination with the West began early, fuelled by his family's stories and his own experience during trips to the frontier.

Remington attended the Yale School of Art but left after his father's death, subsequently drifting through various jobs before committing to art. His career took off in the mid-1880s when he began illustrating for major publications like Harper's Weekly, capturing the rugged landscapes and dynamic life of the frontier with an authenticity and immediacy that captivated audiences.

His works often featured cowboys, Native Americans, soldiers and horses, capturing the drama and romance of the West.

Remington's art is characterised by its attention to detail, vibrant colour palettes, and realistic portrayals of action and movement.

In addition to painting, Remington was a prolific sculptor. His bronzes, such as 'The Broncho Buster' (1895) and 'The Outlaw' (1906) are celebrated for their dynamic compositions and technical excellence.

Despite his romanticised vision of the West, Remington's work was grounded in thorough research and first-hand observation.  He frequently travelled to the frontier to sketch and gather material, ensuring the authenticity of his work. This commitment to realism set his output apart from other contemporary portrayals of the West.

Frederic Remington's legacy is profound. His works not only document an era of American history but also helped shape the popular image of the American West that endures today.
