The artist, John Duncan, is a bit of a mystery. He doesn't appear to be John Duncan (1866-1945), who was a Symbolist artist - there is no record of this kind of illustration in his biography.
Family history records have uncovered several possibilities, our favourite being John Duncan (1870-1928), who is shown as being a journalistic artist.
