This painting, by Jacques-Louis David, is about the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, a French revolutionary leader, by Charlotte Corday on 13th July 1793. Marat died in his bath from a stab wound inflicted by Corday, who believed his radical influence was harming the Revolution. David's painting depicts Marat as a noble martyr and served as political propaganda for the Jacobin cause, which intensified during the ensuing Reign of Terror.
