The Lictors Bringing Brutus the Bodies of His Sons is a Neoclassical history painting by French artist Jacques-Louis David, completed in 1789, the year of the French Revolution. The painting depicts the moment Roman lictors (officers) return the bodies of Brutus' sons to him for burial, after Brutus, the founder of the Roman Republic, was forced to condemn them to death for treason. David's work, exhibited at the Paris Salon, became a republican symbol during the politically charged climate of the revolution, emphasizing civic virtue, sacrifice, and devotion to the nation.
