William Blake's illustration, "The Simoniac Pope" (also known as Inferno, Canto XIX), depicts a scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, where simoniacs (those who bought or sold church positions) are punished by being placed upside down in holes, with flames burning their feet. The illustration focuses on Pope Nicholas III, who is shown upside down in a hole, his legs and feet burning. Blake's work is known for its symbolic representation of Dante's text and its exploration of themes of corruption and divine judgment.
