The Cat and Mouse Act 1913, officially called the Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill Health) Act, was passed in Britain to deal with hunger-striking suffragettes. It allowed the temporary release of prisoners weakened by hunger strikes, only to re-arrest them once they recovered. This controversial tactic aimed to undermine suffragette protests without turning them into martyrs. This process, of release and then recapture, earned the popular title of 'The Cat and Mouse Act' because of the similarities to the way a cat will play with its prey before killing it.
