Sir Richard Grenville (1542-1591) was an English naval commander, explorer, and soldier, best known for his role in the early English colonisation of North America and his heroic last stand at the Battle of Flores. He led the ill-fated Roanoke Colony expedition in 1585 and was a cousin of Sir Walter Raleigh. Grenville’s most famous moment came in 1591, when he commanded the ship Revenge against overwhelming Spanish forces, fighting valiantly before dying from his wounds.
