Sir Francis Drake was an eminent English sea captain and privateer during the Elizabethan era. He is best remembered for his circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, becoming the first Englishman to achieve this feat. Drake also played a pivotal role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, cementing his status as a national hero.
