The repeal of the Napoleonic Code’s provisions regarding male authority over women marked a significant shift in European legal systems. Under the Code, husbands had extensive legal control over their wives, including rights over property, employment, and personal freedom. As countries moved away from the Napoleonic system after 1815, reforms gradually diminished this patriarchal power. Legal changes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries granted women greater autonomy in marriage, property ownership, and civil rights. The rollback of these provisions reflected growing recognition of gender equality, challenging the traditional dominance of men and promoting women’s legal independence within society.
