This is a Mughal painting from the early 17th century, depicting a fantastical plant that gives birth to various real and mythical creatures and birds. This artwork is also known as Waq-waq, referencing a mythical island in Persian and Islamic lore, populated by half-plant/half-animal beings according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The painting was created for a royal album and was intended to be admired for its visual puns and intricate details.
