Jan Vijlbrief (1868-1895) was a Dutch painter. He created landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes and worked in the style of Pointillism.
Vijlbrief studied at the Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix in Leiden. He won prizes for his drawings as early as the age of seventeen. Later, he studied at the art academy in The Hague. In all likelihood, Vijlbrief visited the exhibition of Les Vingt, organised by Jan Toorop, in 1892. Here, following an earlier exhibition of Neo-Impressionism in Amsterdam (1889), the Dutch public was introduced for a second time to the work of Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, and other Pointillists. In subsequent years, he began working in this 'Divisionist' style himself, just like a number of other painters, including Johan Thorn Prikker, Jan Aarts, and Henk Bremmer.
At the age of twenty-seven, he ended his life.
Works by him are held by, among others, the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, USA.
