Simon Verelst Biography
Simon Verelst (1644-1710) was a Dutch-born painter who became renowned for his exquisite flower paintings and portraiture during the late seventeenth century. Born in The Hague, Verelst was the son of Pieter Verelst, himself an accomplished painter, and was likely trained in his father’s studio. Simon’s artistic talents flourished early, and by the 1660s, he had already begun to earn a reputation for his meticulous technique and refined style.
In 1669, Verelst moved to London, where his work quickly attracted the attention of the English elite. He became particularly celebrated for his still lifes, which displayed an extraordinary attention to botanical detail, vibrant colour, and a delicate rendering of petals and foliage. Verelst was often referred to as “the God of Flowers” for his ability to capture the natural beauty and fragility of blooms with remarkable realism.
In addition to his floral compositions, Verelst painted portraits, including members of the English royal family. However, his eccentric personality and volatile temperament were noted by contemporaries and may have hindered his career in later years. Despite this, Simon Verelst’s paintings remain highly valued for their technical brilliance and timeless aesthetic appeal.

Why Book Illustration Deserves a Spot Beside Fine Art Paintings
Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
