John Tenniel
John Tenniel (1820-1914) was an influential British illustrator and political cartoonist, best known for his iconic illustrations in Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and its sequel, "Through the Looking-Glass."
Born on February 28, 1820, in Hanley, Staffordshire, Tenniel demonstrated artistic talent from a young age, ultimately studying at the Royal Academy Schools in London. Tenniel's career began with illustrations for various publications, including "Punch" magazine, where he worked for over 50 years. His sharp wit and keen political insight allowed him to create powerful satirical drawings that commented on the social issues of his time. His work in "Punch" helped establish him as one of the leading cartoonists of the Victorian era, using humour and artistry to address topics ranging from politics to fashion.
In 1865, Tenniel’s life took a pivotal turn when he became the illustrator for Lewis Carroll’s beloved children’s books. His detailed and imaginative illustrations brought the whimsical characters of Wonderland to life, embedding them in popular culture. Tenniel's ability to combine humour with vivid imagery resonated with readers and set a standard for children's literature illustration that influenced many in the field.
Despite facing challenges, including an initial reluctance from Carroll concerning the illustrations' portrayal of his story, Tenniel's work achieved immense popularity. His illustrations became so synonymous with the texts that they are often considered just as important as the stories themselves. Tenniel received numerous accolades throughout his career, including being knighted in 1893 for his contributions to art and illustration.
Tenniel died on 25th February 1914, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists and illustrators today. His unique style and significant contributions to literature and visual storytelling make him a pivotal figure in both the art and literary worlds.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
