Arthur Claude Strachan
Arthur Claude Strachan (1865-1954) was born on 15th March 1865 in Edinburgh, Scotland, to George Strachan (b.1821), an architect, and Mary Strachan (nee Dalrymple, b.1836).
He married Alice Forbes (1865-1934), the daughter of James Forbes, a merchant, in Toxteth Park, Lancashire in 1903 and had children Mabel (b.1904) and Evelyn (b.1905), who were both born in Evesham, Worcestershire.
At the time of the 1921 census, the family was living at 89, Dalmorton Road, New Brighton, Wallasey, Cheshire. At the time of Alice's death in 1934, the family was living at 14 Queen's Road, Wyngate, in Somerset.
Arthur was shown as widowed, by the 1939 register, and living at the same address in Somerset with his two unmarried daughters.
He died in Somerset on 7th August 1954 at the age of 89, as reported in the London Gazette of 24th August 1954.
There appear to be other death dates for this artist floating around the web, however I am confident, through extensive research on family history websites, that these dates are correct.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
