Benjamin D. Sigmund
Benjamin D. Sigmund (1857-1947) was a prolific British genre and landscape painter, renowned primarily for his detailed watercolours depicting rural scenes, cottages, and pastoral life. He exhibited widely at venues like the Royal Academy and sold numerous works through auctions. Little is known about his personal life.
Sigmund painted rural landscapes, cottages, figures (often women and children), sheep, cattle, and garden scenes.
He showed extensively at the Royal Academy (RA), Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), and more.
Sigmund was born in London and lived in various parts of the Home Counties and Devon, dying in Barnstaple, Devon, in 1947.
In essence, Sigmund was a popular, well-exhibited Victorian/Edwardian artist whose charming, affordable watercolours remain sought after by collectors today.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
