William Shiels
William Shiels (1783-1857) was a British painter known for his detailed, scientifically accurate portraits of horses, sheep, and cattle, and also for his work in portraiture and allegorical subjects.
A Scottish artist, born in Westruther, Berwickshire, he trained in Edinburgh and London, worked in both cities and the Scottish Borders, and was a member of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). Shiels also spent time in the United States, serving as Director of the South Carolina Academy of Fine Arts (SCAFA) and exhibiting at the American Academy of Fine Arts.
He died on 20th August 1857 in Edinburgh.
