Hubert Robert Biography

Hubert Robert

Hubert Robert (1733-1808) was a distinguished French painter, draughtsman, and designer, celebrated for his evocative landscapes and architectural capriccios. Born in Paris, Robert’s artistic journey began with an education at the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Early in his career, he travelled to Rome in 1754, where he was profoundly influenced by the ruins of antiquity and the Italian countryside. This Italian sojourn, which lasted over a decade, shaped his enduring fascination with classical architecture and picturesque decay.

Robert’s paintings are characterised by a masterful combination of reality and imagination. Rather than documenting precise locations, he constructed fanciful scenes that evoke the atmosphere of ancient ruins, often blending real monuments with invented structures. His works are suffused with a poetic sense of time’s passage, frequently depicting crumbling columns, overgrown temples, and sun-dappled stonework, inhabited by small, lively figures. This romantic approach earned him the affectionate nickname “Robert des Ruines” in France.

Upon returning to Paris in 1765, Robert swiftly garnered patronage from the French aristocracy and royalty, including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. He was appointed “Designer of the King’s Gardens” and played a significant role in the landscaping of gardens at Versailles and other royal estates. Robert designed the picturesque gardens of the Petit Trianon, creating artificial ruins and follies that mirrored the themes of his paintings.

Despite his close association with the ancien régime, Robert survived the tumult of the French Revolution, although he was imprisoned for several months during the Reign of Terror. Remarkably, he continued to draw and paint even while incarcerated, producing a series of poignant works reflecting on captivity and uncertainty.

Robert’s prolific output encompassed oil paintings, watercolours, gouaches, and an extensive array of drawings. He was also a talented printmaker and contributed designs for decorative arts, stage sets, and architectural projects. His style, blending classical grandeur with a sense of gentle melancholy, had a lasting influence on garden design, painting, and Romantic aesthetics throughout Europe.

Hubert Robert’s legacy endures in major museum collections, including the Louvre, the Hermitage, and the National Gallery in London.
