Clara Peeters
Clara Peeters (1594-c.1640) was a pioneering Flemish still-life painter whose works provide a fascinating glimpse into both the artistry and culture of the early seventeenth century. Born in Antwerp around 1587, Peeters is one of the few known female artists of her era, and her legacy is all the more remarkable given the gender restrictions prevalent in the art world at that time.
Peeters specialised in still-life painting, a genre that flourished in the Low Countries during the Dutch Golden Age. Her paintings are renowned for their exquisite detail, luminous surfaces, and sophisticated compositions. She often depicted luxurious displays of food, flowers, and ornate tableware, rendered with an astonishing realism. Peeters’ ability to capture the play of light on silver, glass, and porcelain demonstrates her technical mastery and acute powers of observation.
One of the hallmarks of Peeters’ work is her inclusion of self-referential motifs, such as her tiny reflection in the polished surfaces of goblets or pewter lids. These subtle self-portraits serve as a testament to her presence in a male-dominated field and have been interpreted as quiet assertions of her identity and skill. Her paintings frequently feature lavish arrangements of cheeses, breads, fruits, nuts, and seafood, all depicted with a tactile immediacy that invites the viewer to appreciate both the beauty and transience of earthly pleasures.
Peeters’ compositions are carefully balanced, often with a strong sense of symmetry, and her use of colour is both harmonious and rich. The objects she chose to depict were not merely decorative but also bore symbolic meanings related to wealth, mortality, and the senses. Her paintings reflect the prosperity of the Flemish bourgeoisie as well as the era’s fascination with the material world.
Although biographical information about Peeters is scarce, her surviving works, signed and dated between 1607 and 1621, have secured her a place among the leading artists of her generation. She was not only one of the earliest specialists in still-life painting but also among the first women to achieve professional recognition as an artist. Today, her paintings are held in major collections, including the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
Clara Peeters’ art remains a testament to her exceptional talent and perseverance. Her meticulous still lifes continue to captivate viewers, offering both aesthetic pleasure and a window into the social and cultural fabric of her time.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
