Jean-Baptiste Oudry Biography
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a prominent French painter, engraver, and tapestry designer, best known for his exquisite depictions of animals and hunting scenes. Born in Paris, Oudry was the son of a prosperous painter and art dealer, which provided him early exposure to the world of art. He studied under the notable portraitist Nicolas de Largillière, gaining a solid foundation in the academic traditions that shaped his style.
Oudry’s career took flight when he was admitted to the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1717. Initially, he painted religious and historical subjects, but it was his remarkable skill in capturing animals and still lifes that set him apart. His works display a keen observation of nature, coupled with an ability to render fur, feathers, and textures with extraordinary finesse. This talent soon caught the eye of King Louis XV, who became one of his most significant patrons.
Oudry’s association with the royal court led to important commissions at the Château de Versailles and other royal residences. He became the official painter to the royal hunt, a position that allowed him to accompany the king and document hunting expeditions. His paintings from this period, such as scenes of game animals and hounds in action, are celebrated for their lively composition and meticulous detail. Oudry’s works are distinguished by a sense of vitality and realism, influenced by his direct study of animals from life, often at the royal menagerie.
In addition to his paintings, Oudry made substantial contributions to tapestry design. He worked extensively with the Beauvais and Gobelins tapestry factories, creating cartoons that were transformed into sumptuous wall hangings. His series based on the fables of Jean de La Fontaine became particularly famous, blending narrative charm with visual elegance. These tapestries were in high demand among the European nobility, enhancing Oudry’s reputation across the continent.
Oudry was also a skilled draughtsman and engraver, producing a vast number of preparatory sketches and prints. His legacy lies in his ability to elevate animal painting to a level of artistry previously reserved for more prestigious genres. Today, his works are housed in major museums, including the Louvre and the Wallace Collection. Jean-Baptiste Oudry remains a master of observation, whose art captures the beauty and drama of the natural world with both accuracy and imagination.

Why Book Illustration Deserves a Spot Beside Fine Art Paintings
Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
