George F. Nicholls Biography
George Frederick Nicholls (1857-1939) was a watercolour artist and book illustrator who contributed to many travel books in the early 20th century.
Born in Staines, Middlesex, UK, Nicholls' early career was as a bookkeeper and accountant. He married Lucy Fitzgerald Best Tarleton in 1879 and the couple lived in Worcestershire.
In 1911, the census shows that Nicholls had turned to painting as a career, probably before this, as his earliest book credits are from 1908.
Nicholls exhibited 1885-1937. He exhibited 51 works at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 20 works at the RI, 10 at the RA, 32 at the RCA and 142 works at the Walker's Gallery, London.
Wife Lucy died in 1918 and Nicholls married second-wife Mary Camden in around 1919.
Nicholls' book credits include British Highways & Byways from a Motor car (1908), The Cotswolds (1908), Cornwall (1915), Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful series (1920s), Gloucestershire (1927) and Scotland (1932, with Sutton Palmer).

Why Book Illustration Deserves a Spot Beside Fine Art Paintings
Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
