Samuel Barret McCormick

Samuel Barret McCormick (1890-1965) was an American writer, actor, and artist, widely celebrated for his work on vintage movie posters.

He is particularly famous for illustrating classic, highly collectible cinema posters, most notably the 1933 original release of King Kong. His career as a writer, actor, and artist spanned early Hollywood and beyond.

He was born in Dewitt, Missouri, on 16th August 1890 and died in Denver, Colorado, on 28th September 1965. He was involved in early silent cinema, known for his writing and acting credits on films like The Disciple (1915), The Golden God (1914), and False Fronts (1922).

He created renowned vintage poster art and standees, including collaborations with Robert F. Sisk, such as the iconic 1933 King Kong American three-sheet. These posters are now highly prized by collectors, occasionally fetching thousands of dollars at auctions through galleries like Christie's.

Some vintage posters by Sam McCormick will now be in the public domain, as they were published before 1963 and their copyrights were not renewed after 28 years. See our 'Copyright Rules Explained'.
