Auguste Matisse Biography

Matisse, Auguste

Auguste Matisse (1866-1931) was a French painter born on 22 May 1866. He was not related to his much better-known namesake Henri Matisse (1869-1954).

Auguste was a painter, illustrator and glass painter. He studied in Dijon and Paris and was later, like his namesake, associated with Fauvism, mainly painting maritime landscapes. In 1895, he became a member of the Société des Artiste Français and in 1924 designed the official poster for the Chamonix Winter Games. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics and at 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix.

Matisse died of a stroke on 19 September 1931 at his studio in Bréhat.
