J.W. Ludlow

Joseph Williamson Ludlow (1840-1916) was a renowned British artist, illustrator, and lithographer, best known for his highly detailed, anatomically accurate depictions of poultry and pigeons. Often referred to as J.W. Ludlow, his work was prominent in the late 19th century, particularly in influential publications such as Cassell's Poultry Book and The Illustrated Book of Pigeons.

He specialised in avian subjects, portraying various prize-winning breeds in natural, farm-like settings. His work is noted for precision, often featuring vibrant watercolours and detailed gouache over pencil, which were later turned into chromolithographs.

Ludlow's illustrations are often used in historical references regarding Victorian-era poultry breeding achievements.

Ludlow married Georgina Mary Shaw (1838-1890) in 1863, and they had three daughters - Emily Mary (b.1865), Anne Maria (b.1867) and Jessie Louisa (b.1874).
