Horace Mann Livens (1862-1936) was born in Croydon, South London, in 1936.
He studied art under Walter Wallis at Croydon School of Art for two years and at Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts, Antwerp under Charles Verlat, where he met Vincent van Gogh. At the suggestion of Van Gogh, he went to Paris to study French painting.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1890-9, NEAC 1896-1904, Grosvenor Gallery and abroad. Livens had his first solo exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in 1911. He was a foundation associate and, from 1907, a member of the International Society.
He illustrated E. V. Lucas's London Revisited (1916) and continued to exhibit until 1929.
