John Hardwicke Lewis Biography
John Hardwicke Lewis (1842-1927) was born in Hyderabad, India, in 1842. He first studied painting with his father, Frederic Christian Lewis, and continued in Paris with Thomas Couture.
He married Ellen Louisa Andrews, daughter of the late Rev Dr. W. Andrews, on 7th February 1866 at the British Embassy in Paris.
The couple had a daughter, May Hardwicke Lewis (b.1882?), who also illustrated books alongside her father.
From 1875 to 1885, he was in San Francisco as an illustrator for newspapers. After returning to Europe, he was active in London, where he was a member of the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. He exhibited portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes of California at the Royal Academy until 1899.
After working in London for several years, he moved to Switzerland and died in Veylaux in 1927.
