G. Leslie Hunter Biography
George Leslie Hunter (1877-1931) was a prominent Scottish painter, celebrated as one of the renowned group known as the Scottish Colourists. Born in Rothesay on the Isle of Bute, Hunter’s early life was shaped by his family’s emigration to California in 1892. While in America, he began his artistic career as an illustrator, working primarily in black and white. This period saw him develop an appreciation for the expressive possibilities of line and composition, yet it was only upon his return to Scotland in 1904 that his distinctive style began to emerge.
Hunter’s artistic trajectory changed dramatically after his exposure to French Post-Impressionism, particularly the works of Cézanne and Matisse. Inspired by their bold use of colour and form, Hunter embraced a brighter, more vivid palette and a looser approach to brushwork. In 1908, he travelled to Paris, where he absorbed the influences of contemporary French art, further refining his technique. This influence was pivotal, and it would come to define his mature work.
Upon returning to Scotland, Hunter settled for a time in Glasgow, where he formed close associations with fellow artists S.J. Peploe, F.C.B. Cadell, and J.D. Fergusson. Together, these painters would become known as the Scottish Colourists, a group whose vibrant and modern approach to painting revitalised the Scottish art scene. Although the Colourists shared certain stylistic similarities, Hunter’s work remained distinguished by its lyrical, almost poetic quality. His paintings, often depicting still lifes, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life, are characterised by their harmonious compositions and sensuous use of colour.
Hunter’s preferred subjects included the landscapes of the Scottish west coast, the bustling harbours of Fife, and the tranquil beauty of the French countryside. His still life paintings, in particular, are celebrated for their rich textures and subtle interplay of light and shadow. Despite periods of financial difficulty and ill health, Hunter continued to paint with remarkable intensity until his death in 1931 at the age of 54.
Today, G Leslie Hunter is regarded as a pivotal figure in twentieth-century Scottish art. His innovative approach to colour and form, coupled with his ability to infuse everyday scenes with a sense of wonder, ensures his enduring legacy. Hunter’s works are held in major collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland, and continue to inspire appreciation for his unique vision.

Why Book Illustration Deserves a Spot Beside Fine Art Paintings
Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
