Norman Howard Biography

Norman Howard

Norman Douglas Howard (1899-1955) was a painter of marine, transport and architectural subjects. He was particularly known for his poster designs, which epitomise the novelty, excitement and availability of travel in the first half of the twentieth century.

Born on 13th April 1899, Howard studied at the Camberwell School of Art 1918-20 and then at the Westminster School of Art under Walter Bayes from 1920-24. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the Society of Aviation Artists (at their inaugural exhibition in 1954) and the Society of Marine Artists (he was elected a member in 1938). His many posters for the Railway companies and a large series of educational posters for Macmillan encompass such diverse subjects as railway journeys in Britain and Africa, as well as industry and agriculture.

Howard lived in Richmond, Surrey, and died on 9th March 1955.
