John Frederick Herring
John Frederick Herring (1795-1865) occupies a distinguished place in the annals of nineteenth-century British art, celebrated primarily for his masterful depictions of horses and rural life. Born in London to a Dutch father who was also an artist and merchant, Herring’s early years were marked by humble beginnings. He initially worked as a sign painter and coachman in Doncaster, Yorkshire, but his undeniable talent for equine artistry soon attracted the attention of local gentry and horse owners. This pivotal shift enabled him to dedicate himself to painting, laying the groundwork for his illustrious career.
Herring’s reputation flourished as he became one of the leading sporting artists of his generation. His works frequently captured the vitality and elegance of racehorses, hunters, and rural scenes, making him a sought-after painter among aristocratic patrons. Notably, he received commissions from Queen Victoria herself, who admired his ability to portray not only the physical attributes of horses but also their spirit and character. His detailed studies of famous racehorses, such as the Derby winners, remain iconic pieces within the genre of equestrian art.
While horses were central to Herring’s oeuvre, his artistic range extended to farmyard scenes and landscapes, often populated with livestock and rural figures. His paintings exude a sense of tranquillity and affection for the English countryside, reflecting a deep appreciation for pastoral life. Herring’s works are characterised by their meticulous attention to anatomical accuracy, nuanced use of light, and harmonious composition, qualities that have ensured their enduring appeal.
The artist’s influence extended to his family, with several of his children, including John Frederick Herring Jr., following in his footsteps as accomplished painters. This familial tradition contributed to the Herring name becoming synonymous with rural and sporting art throughout the Victorian era.
Herring’s legacy is firmly cemented in British art history, with his paintings gracing prestigious collections and galleries, including the Royal Academy, where he exhibited regularly. His ability to blend technical skill with an emotive approach to subject matter has rendered his work timeless. Today, John Frederick Herring is remembered not only as a preeminent animal painter but also as a chronicler of nineteenth-century rural England, whose evocative canvases continue to captivate art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
