Sturtevant J. Hamblin

Sturtevant J. Hamblin

Sturtevant J. Hamblin (1817-1884) was a 19th-century American portrait painter, sometimes spelled "Hamblen," known for his work in a "primitive" or folk art style.

He was the brother-in-law of fellow painter William Matthew Prior and the two often worked together in a collaborative "Prior-Hamblin School" in Portland, Maine, and later Boston, Massachusetts.

His portraits are characterised by a distinctive style, including heavy white highlights and specific rendering of features like hands and eyes.
