Eva Gonzalès
Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883) was a French Impressionist painter whose artistic career, though brief, left a significant mark on the art world of the late nineteenth century. Born in Paris into a cultured family, her father was a noted writer and her mother a musician, Gonzalès was exposed to the arts from an early age. This early immersion in the creative milieu of Paris profoundly shaped her sensibilities and ambitions.
In 1869, Gonzalès began taking formal lessons with the esteemed academic painter Charles Chaplin, but her artistic direction changed dramatically when she became the only official pupil of Édouard Manet in 1869. The influence of Manet on her style is evident, particularly in her use of light, bold brushwork, and a focus on contemporary life. Yet, Gonzalès developed her own voice, distinguished by a subtle lyricism and a delicate approach to her subjects. Her paintings often depict intimate domestic scenes, portraits, and women engaged in everyday activities, rendered with sensitivity and nuance.
Gonzalès exhibited her work at the Salon de Paris, the prestigious annual official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, beginning in 1870. Despite the challenges faced by female artists in a male-dominated art scene, she gained recognition for her refined technique and modern sensibility. Her best-known painting, “La femme en blanc” (The Woman in White), showcases her mastery of tonal harmony and composition, capturing a sense of quiet introspection.
Unlike some of her contemporaries, Gonzalès did not participate in the Impressionist group exhibitions, likely due in part to her association with Manet and her commitment to the Salon system. However, her work shares many characteristics with Impressionism, such as the depiction of fleeting moments, the focus on light, and the portrayal of contemporary subjects.
Tragically, Eva Gonzalès’s promising career was cut short when she died at the age of thirty-four, just days after giving birth to her son. Her early death meant that her oeuvre remained relatively small, yet her paintings continue to be celebrated for their elegance and emotional depth. Today, art historians recognise Gonzalès as an important figure in the Impressionist movement and a pioneering female artist who navigated the complexities of the nineteenth-century art world with remarkable talent and determination.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
