Henry Gawthorn
Henry George Gawthorn (1879-1941) was a British painter and lithographer renowned for his contributions to early 20th-century travel and transport posters.
Born in Northampton, he pursued architectural studies at Regent Street Polytechnic and Heatherley's School of Fine Art in London. Transitioning from architecture to the arts, Gawthorn became celebrated for his vibrant poster designs, notably for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). His works often depicted dynamic scenes of travel and leisure, characterised by bold compositions and a distinctive Art Deco style.
Beyond his artistic creations, Gawthorn authored books on poster design, sharing his expertise and influencing the field. His legacy endures through his iconic posters, which continue to be appreciated for their artistic and historical significance.
