Howard Chandler Christy
Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952) was a distinguished American artist, illustrator, and painter, renowned for his vibrant portrayals of early twentieth-century society and his iconic depictions of the “Christy Girl.” Born in 1872 in Ohio, Christy displayed artistic talent from a young age, eventually studying at the Art Students League of New York under the notable artist William Merritt Chase. His early career was marked by illustrations for magazines such as Scribner’s and Harper’s, which brought him national recognition, particularly for his work as a combat artist during the Spanish-American War.
Christy’s war illustrations, rendered with a keen eye for realism and emotion, captured the drama and heroism of combat, earning him widespread acclaim. These works established him as one of America’s leading illustrators, sought after for both his technical skill and his ability to convey compelling narratives through art. However, it was his creation of the “Christy Girl” that truly cemented his place in American culture. The “Christy Girl” was a portrayal of the modern, independent, and attractive young woman, embodying the ideals of the era. She appeared in countless magazine covers, advertisements, and posters, becoming a symbol of contemporary femininity, much like Charles Dana Gibson’s “Gibson Girl.”
Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Christy’s influence extended beyond illustration to portraiture and large-scale paintings. He painted numerous prominent figures, including presidents such as Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. His portrait of Grace Coolidge, with her dog Rob Roy, remains one of the most beloved First Lady portraits. Christy’s style, marked by luminous colours, fluid brushwork, and a focus on glamour and grace, made his works instantly recognisable.
In addition to portraiture, Christy produced several important historical paintings. Perhaps his most famous is the monumental scene of the signing of the United States Constitution, which hangs in the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. This work typifies his talent for capturing both the grandeur and the human element in historical moments.
Christy’s legacy endures not only through his artwork but also through his contribution to shaping the visual culture of his time. His images helped define American ideals of beauty, heroism, and patriotism in the early twentieth century. Today, Howard Chandler Christy is remembered as one of the preeminent illustrators and artists of his generation, whose work continues to be celebrated for its elegance and historical significance.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
