Ramon Casas i Carbo Biography
Ramon Casas i Carbó (1866-1932) was a prominent Catalan painter, draughtsman, and graphic artist whose work was pivotal in the development of modern art in Spain at the turn of the twentieth century. Born in Barcelona, Casas showed a precocious talent for art, leaving formal schooling at a young age to pursue his passion. At just fifteen, he travelled to Paris to further his artistic education, enrolling at the prestigious Académie Carolus-Duran. This early exposure to the vibrant Parisian art scene would profoundly influence his style, introducing him to Impressionism and the avant-garde movements of the day.
Casas became known for his portraits, genre scenes, and cityscapes, capturing the spirit of both Barcelona and Paris with remarkable sensitivity. His paintings often depicted the bourgeoisie and intellectual elite of Catalonia, as well as scenes from everyday life, rendered with a keen eye for detail and a subtle use of light and colour. Casas’ brushwork was fluid and expressive, and he possessed a particular gift for capturing the character and mood of his sitters.
A central figure in the Catalan modernisme movement, Casas was closely associated with Els Quatre Gats, a celebrated café in Barcelona that served as a meeting place for artists, writers, and intellectuals, including a young Pablo Picasso. Casas not only contributed his artwork to the café’s décor but also co-founded the venue, making it a centre for artistic innovation and exchange. His posters and illustrations for Els Quatre Gats and other publications showcased his mastery of graphic design and his ability to blend fine art with commercial art forms.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Casas was an avid traveller, drawing inspiration from his journeys across Europe and beyond. His work reflects a cosmopolitan outlook, uniting Catalan identity with broader European trends. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely, earning acclaim in Spain and abroad, and was recognised with numerous awards.
Casas’ later years saw a return to more traditional themes, focusing on portraiture and landscapes. His legacy endures through his substantial body of work, which remains celebrated for its elegance, technical skill, and innovative spirit. Ramon Casas stands as a key figure in Spanish art history, bridging the gap between nineteenth-century academicism and the modernist movements that shaped the twentieth century.

Why Book Illustration Deserves a Spot Beside Fine Art Paintings
Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
