Ford Madox Brown
Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) was a prominent English painter during the 19th century, known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and for his vivid depictions of historical and literary themes. Born on 16th April 1821 in Calais, France, Brown was the son of an English father and a French mother. His family later moved to England, where he pursued his artistic career, eventually studying at the Manchester School of Art and the Royal Academy in London.
Brown's works are characterised by their attention to detail, rich colour palettes, and intricate narrative content. He was particularly skilled in painting historical subjects and was dedicated to exploring contemporary issues through his art. One of his most famous works, "The Last of England," portrays a couple departing from England, laden with a sense of melancholy and hope. This painting resonates with themes of migration and the search for a better life, reflecting the socio-economic conditions of his time.
Throughout his career, Brown was not only a painter but also served as an influential teacher and mentor to younger artists, including members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais. His innovative approach to composition and colour significantly impacted their work, encouraging them to embrace a more vivid and expressive style.
In addition to historical themes, Brown explored everyday life in Victorian England, often focusing on the lives of the working class, and human emotions in his portraits. His dedication to realism and narrative depth helped bridge the gap between romanticism and the emerging modern styles of art.
Despite facing criticism during his lifetime, Brown's legacy endures, as he is now celebrated for his contributions to Victorian art and his role in shaping the aesthetics of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
