Alexander Ballingall
Alexander Ballingall (1847-c.1927) was born in Largo, Scotland to William Ballingall (b.1817), a linen weaver, and Jean (nee Wilson) Ballingall (b.1819). His siblings included William (b.1840), George (b.1844) and David (b.1849).
He began his career as an engraver, as did his brother William. Both the 1891 and 1901 censuses show Alexander as being a marine, landscape and figure painter.
Some time between 1881 and 1891 Alexander married Marion who was 13 years his junior, however he is shown to be a widower by 1901.
The dates for this artist are widely shown on the internet as 1870-1910 but we can find no evidence to corroborate this. One site selling one of his works shows these dates whilst stating the painting they have for sale is signed and dated 1912, so something is clearly amiss.
Investigations will continue....

William Orpen's 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France'
There is a fascinating story about this picture that not only highlights the pomposity and arrogance of the politicians of the time of World War I but has also introduced me to the word 'vainglory', which I hadn't heard before but which is no doubt appropriate for some of today's leaders.
