Ethel Lavinia Tanner Biography
Ethel Lavinia Tanner (1881-1935) was born in Kensington, London, in 1881 to Augustus W. Tanner, an architect and district surveyor, and Lavinia Tanner, nee Botts (b.1849).
The 1901 census shows that she was an art student in that year and, as well as her parents, she lived with siblings Albert Stringer (b.1876), Melita (b.1877), Rudolph (b.1879) and Lois Jane Victoria (b.1888).
Ethel illustrated The Mischievous Puppy by Leslie Martin in 1919. Her illustrations are very similar to that of Cecil Aldin, who went to art school in Kensington. It's possible that they knew each other, or that she at least emulated his style.
Ethel never married and died in Putney on 8th May 1935, leaving £783 to her younger sister Lois.

Why Book Illustration Deserves a Spot Beside Fine Art Paintings
Let’s have a proper look at something that’s always irked me: the idea that book illustration is somehow a lesser art form than fine art painting.
