Herbert Alfred Rankin (1864-1926) was born in Braintree, Essex, UK, in 1864 to John James Rankin (b.1836), a brushmaker and Annie Maria Rankin (b.1834).
He trained to be a teacher as soon as he left school. He married Maria Parker (1864-1936) in 1885. The couple's children included Sydney (b.1887), Frank (b.1889), Harcourt (b.1892), Edward (b.1896) and Emily (b.1899).
Rankin had various teaching roles, including at a London boarding school.
He wrote and illustrated several books for Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons Publishers, including:-
Simple Lessons in Colour (36 colour plates)
Pastel Work, or Colour with Crayons (32 colour plates)
Pastel Work: Flowers 1914 (36 colour plates)
Pencil Drawing
Simple Pictorial Illustration, with F.H. Brown (22 3-colour plates, 9 2-colour plates).
