Edward A. Goodes Biography
Edward A. Goodes (1832-1910) was an American painter known for his marine landscapes and still lifes, who also served as a sergeant in the Union Army during the Civil War.
Goodes was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the sixth child of an English immigrant tailor. He may have trained as a portrait painter in his youth before moving to Philadelphia. His career involved both commercial sign painting and his work as a fine artist.
Goodes' paintings were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he was recognised for his marine scenes and still life paintings. He also painted a portrait of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont and other naval scenes. Goodes is the artist behind works like "Fishbowl Fantasy" and "Excelsior".
