Adolphe Birkenruth

Adolph Birkenruth (1863-1940) was born in 1861 in Grahamstown, South Africa. His father was a Prussian diamond broker, his mother came from Frankfurt, which is where the family moved back to in the 1860s. There Birkenruth attended the University and further studied in Paris.

In the 1880s he moved to London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In addition, he worked as an illustrator for several magazines, including the ‘Black & White’ weekly or the London News.

At the time of his death in 1940, he was living at 23 Cheyne Row, London.
