The poem 'The Rape of the Lock' by Alexander Pope satirises a minor incident of life (Petre had cut off a lock of Arabella's hair without permission), by comparing it to the epic world of the gods. The poem's title does not refer to sexual rape, but to an earlier definition of the word derived from the Latin 'rapere', which means 'to snatch, to grab, to carry off'.
